Cyder producer Healeys doubles production capacity following £5m investment
Cornish cyder producer Healeys has made a £5m investment into its production facilities with the aim of increasing its on-trade distribution throughout the UK.
As part of the £5m investment, the business has doubled its processing capacity with the addition of a second apple press. This has enabled it go from processing three tonnes of apples per hour, to six tonnes.
Tank capacity has also doubled from its existing twelve 50,000 litre fermentation tanks with the addition of six new 100,000 litre fermentation tanks, holding the juice of approximately six million apples in total.
Healeys has also invested in a new water-powered apple transportation system, water harvesting, cleaning and storage facilities, and an underground warehousing facility.
Speaking to The Caterer, Joe Healey, managing director, trading at Healeys said investing and upgrading in its systems is part of the cyder company's plan "to build our on-trade distribution throughout the UK", both through its existing distributors which comprise St. Austell Brewery, Molson Coors and LWC, and through new partnerships with wholesalers, breweries, and pubs.
He added: "With this new investment, we hope to be able to bring our unique and refreshing Cornish-made products to a local near you."
Alongside building its on-trade distribution, Healey said the investment is also part of a long-term strategy to reduce the company's carbon footprint which includes producing 75% of its energy requirements onsite from renewable sources within the next five years.
The Duke of Edinburgh visited the site on 15 September to unveil a plaque to commemorate the opening of the updated production facilities and cyder house.
Healeys was founded in 1980 by David and Kay Healey and is now run by their sons Sam and Joe.
