Majority of hospitality students still committed to a career in the industry

A survey of hospitality students by People 1st International found 86% were still committed to the industry despite ongoing disruption due to Covid.

However, work-life balance, pay and learning and development were ranked as the top three factors in attracting and retaining these students.

The survey showed that while the sector is facing an immediate staff shortage with many workers leaving their jobs during lockdown, those studying to gain the skills required by the industry remained enthusiastic about a career in hospitality.

Sean Wheeler, people and culture consultant, said the survey "demonstrated the commitment" of the students, while Sandra Kelly, UK director of People 1st International, added that it was clear "future employees want flexibility, opportunity and secure income".

Kathryn Porter, chair of the Hospitality Skills & Quality board, added: "To retain this valuable talent in our industry, we need to offer the right environment for people to flourish. A step change is required to achieve a cultural shift and develop more responsible managers and leaders who have a social conscience and look after their teams, the reality is our industry is packed with amazing diverse and accessible opportunities."
