Michelin to launch hotel equivalent of Michelin star

Michelin is to launch a hotel equivalent of a Michelin star for exceptional hotel experiences as it seeks to drive sales on its booking platform.

Michelin keys will be awarded annually, much like the Michelin stars, with the first hotels recognised in 2024.

The guide claimed that the new award was the product of four years of work and was in response to what it described as "the hyper standardisation of accommodation". It said it would recognise properties that provoke emotion through architectural choices and craftsmanship.

Currently there are 5,000 hotels in 120 countries are listed in the Michelin Guide hotel selection. Michelin said inspectors were in the field and that the Michelin key selection would be revealed in the first half of 2024.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said: "The Michelin key is a clear, reliable indication for travellers. Just as the Michelin star distinguishes those restaurants that are at the peak of their art, the Michelin key recognises the most exceptional hotels throughout the world. It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed, enthusiastic hospitality professionals."
