Here is a comprehensive list of every restaurant in Wales with a Michelin accolade, including the new entries for 2023

It's no secret that Wales is up-and-coming in the Michelin scene. In 2022's Michelin announcement, Ynyshir became the country's first restaurant to receive two Michelin stars, with SY23 and Home at Penarth each being awarded their first stars.

In the 2023 guide, all seven restaurants retained their stars, and one restaurant gained a Bib Gourmand.

Ynyshir, Machynlleth, Powys

Set on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, Ynyshir is the ultimate immersive dining experience which earned itself a second Michelin star in 2022. The restaurant prides itself on a four-to-five-hour-long theatrical experience, where diners can expect fire as their food is brought to them personally by the chef. The menu, devised by chef-owner Gareth Ward, features around 30 dishes ranging from miso-cured black cod to bluefin tuna. The Ynyshir experience also extends to an overnight stay which can be bought as a package when booking a dinner reservation.

Home, Penarth, Cardiff

A new entry to the Michelin guide in 2022, Home is the definition of a family affair. Run by James Sommerin and his family, Home strives to provide a safe haven for its guests with an added touch of what they call intentional mystery. The restaurant offers a surprise menu featuring seasonal produce meaning the menu will be different on every visit. The Michelin guide says: "Home means many different things to different people – but one constant is a feeling of comfort and care, which this intimate restaurant delivers in spades."

SY23, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion

Part-owned by Ynyshir alumnus Nathan Davies, SY23 was added to the Michelin Guide in 2022 and received the ‘Michelin Opening of the Year Award'. The restaurant uses locally-sourced ingredients which they say have either been "foraged, farmed or fished" to put together a 10-course menu. Every course has been influenced by flavours of Asia and Europe and is cooked on a charcoal grill. SY23's dark blue colour scheme provides the backdrop for a bustling ground-floor bar where diners can delve into the full wine list.

Walnut Tree, Llanddewi Skirrid

Located two-miles east of Abergavenny, Walnut Tree prides itself on being the "food-lovers destination since the 1960s". Previously chef-owner of the Merchant House in Ludlow, Shaun Hill can be found in the kitchen creating dishes using seasonal ingredients, such as local beef and game. The restaurant has held a Michelin star since 2010, owing to the extensive menu which features dishes such as potato samosa with rajma dal and yoghurt, as well as seabass with chickpeas, chorizo and crab.

Sosban & The Old Butchers, Menai Bridge

The clue is in the name when it comes to the location of Sosban & the Old Butchers – in the heart of a historical Butchers shop in Menai Bridge on the Isle of Anglesey. Welsh produce is used to create bold and original flavours, offering what they call a "unique, dining experience". The Michelin guide praises host, Bethan, for her well-paced service.

Beach House, Oxwich

Set by the sand of Oxwich Bay in Swansea, Oxwich Beach takes inspiration from its rustic backdrop in providing a menu which showcases the best seasonal, local produce on their doorstep. Since its opening in 2016, head chef Hywel Griffith has built a relaxed dining experience with the help of resident sommelier, Oliver, who has cultivated an extensive wine list centred around provenance, sustainability and great value.

The Whitebrook, Whitebrook

Head chef of the Whitebrook, Chris Harrod, takes inspiration from the surrounding Wye Valley in creating this restaurant's menu, 90% of which is sourced from within 12 miles of its woodland setting. The local produce ranges from rare breed meat to sea vegetables from the Severn Estuary to ingredients grown in the Whitebrook's own kitchen garden. Harrod doesn't shy away from unusual ingredients either in creating a menu which features sweet cicely, dandelion honey and elderflower.

Restaurants in Wales with a Bib Gourmand

Yr Hen Printworks, Cardigan

This small plate tapas restaurant is situated in west Wales, in a building that was once a stone chapel, then a printworks for the local paper, before its current iteration as a restaurant. A family farm supplies some of the meat on the menu, with dishes such as pork and apricot terrine with prune ketchup, and oyster mushroom tart with egg yolk.

Hare & Hounds, Aberthin

Hare & Hounds epitomises the warmth and comfort which can only be found in a local pub. The pub has been serving the locals of Aberthin for over 300 years, offering hearty British food in front of a wood-burning stove. Chef Tom Watts-Jones strives to offer the most seasonal menu in Wales, rooted in produce grown in either his three-acre allotment, his family farm or brought back from foraging and hunting trips.

Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias, Colwyn Bay

This three-time Bib Gourmand winner is a bistro set in a laid-back space with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Colwyn Bay. Created by Bryn Williams, to whom the restaurant owes its name, the menu spotlights Welsh produce, including locally-caught shellfish. Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias also received the AA Restaurant of the Year for Wales 19/20 award.

Restaurants in Wales with a Michelin Green Star

Chapters, Hay-on-Wye

Chapters opened in 2019 with the aim to showcase small producers and independent businesses from Hay-on-Wye and the surrounding areas. Sustainability is at the heart of everything Chapters do from their culinary practice to their interior which features a bar made from reclaimed scaffolding boards. This thread is continued through their set menu which intends to keep food waste down by sharing leftovers amongst staff and adding any remaining food to a compost bin to fertilize the soil used to grow fresh ingredients on-site.

Henry Robertson – Palé Hall, Llandderfel

Sustainability underpins everything Palé Hall do. The hotel's current owners have invested in maintaining the hydro system which was installed in 1920. The head chef also chooses local suppliers, who are themselves invested in sustainable growing and livestock rearing, in an effort to reduce their CO2 emissions. Palé Hall also employ skilled gardeners to protect their wildlife and make their own compost.
