Fat Macy's launches £45,000 crowdfund to open restaurant and training space

Social enterprise caterer Fat Macy's has launched a £45,000 crowdfunding campaign towards opening a new restaurant and training space.

The group helps young Londoners move out of temporary hostel accommodation and save a deposit for their own home by offering them access to hospitality work and training.

Fat Macy's launched as a supper club in 2016 and opened its first restaurant, Ebury, in London's Pimlico in 2020. The venue received a glowing review from Marina O'Loughlin in The Sunday Times last week.

Trainees volunteer their time on a 200-hour programme, which earns them a house deposit. This includes working with chefs in a kitchen, in front of house roles or with a business operations team. Candidates are supported for up to two years as they make the move towards independent living.

Now Fat Macy's has secured a former House of Vapes site in Shoreditch, which its wants to open as a second restaurant and use to create a larger dedicated training and learning space. This would allow it to work with 100 trainees and provide 25 housing deposits over the next 12 months.

Fat Macy's is looking to raise at least £45,000 on Crowdfunder to make the site a reality.

Nathalie Mourkarzel, culinary director at Fat Macy's, said: "The pandemic has hit the hospitality industry hard and sadly we're no exception. Our team and trainees have really pulled together to adapt to these difficult circumstances, but it's been a challenging time."

Rewards on offer include lunches and coffees at the new restaurant and wine tastings and private dining experiences.
