Gleneagles sees rise in turnover as multimillion-pound refurbishment continues

Gleneagles hotel saw a rise in turnover last year as it continued its multimillion-pound refurbishment programme.

The five-AA-star, 232-room hotel in Auchterarder, Perthshire, invested in a staff accommodation block and a new boiler and heating system during the year to 31 March 2023.

Gleneagles employed an average of 1,148 people during the year and said a staff-wide survey would be undertaken this month to understand levels of engagement and improve its company culture.

The luxury resort said it had seen ongoing success selling itself as a ‘Glorious Playground' in the Scottish countryside.

It posted a pre-tax profit of £4.8m, down from a £7m profit the previous year.

However, turnover rose from just over £69m to £83.5m while operating costs increased from £60m to £75m.

"Given the continued success, the same strategy will be followed in the coming year, with ongoing development and new ideas and concepts in order to remain competitive," the hotel accounts said.

June 2022 saw the opening of the Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh, the first city-based spin-off of the brand in its almost 100-year history, which features 33 bedrooms, a restaurant, wellness space and members' club.

Gleneagles managing director Conor O'Leary was this month named Hotelier of the Year 2023 in recognition of his work repositioning the business from a mainly golf-led hotel and developing the Gleneagles Townhouse project.
