Mercato Metropolitano to open Canary Wharf market as part of £35m expansion plan

Mercato Metropolitano is planning to open a new market in London's Canary Wharf this summer as part of a further roll-out of the community food brand.

The Wood Wharf site is part of a £35m expansion plan that will include markets in Southwark and Ilford, scheduled to open this year.

MMy Wood Wharf will occupy 600 sq m on two levels with a community market on the upper level and jazz venue below.

Like Mercato Metropolitano's existing sites in Mayfair and Elephant and Castle (pictured), the community market will feature artisanal kitchens, a deli, bakery and suppliers of wine and cheese.

In order to engage the local community, MMy Wood Wharf will include a programme of activities centred around food accessibility and nutrition.

Martin Jones, retail leasing executive, Canary Wharf Group, said: "Mercato Metropolitano's business model fits our vision for Wood Wharf in bringing creative, educational and highly entrepreneurial businesses to Canary Wharf that have the ability to continuously adapt and widen our appeal."
