Park Hyatt to open on London's Strand

The hotel set to open at London's 5 Strand, just off Trafalgar Square, will launch under the luxury Park Hyatt brand, according to planning documents lodged with Westminster City Council.

The 200-bedroom, 11-storey hotel will be the UK's first Park Hyatt when it opens, with a ground floor lounge and restaurant, and an all-day restaurant on the top floor.

The current eight-storey building, constructed in the 1980s and until recently let as offices to Westminster City Council, is expected to be demolished after the council's planning committee granted conditional permission for the development last month. The ground floor retail space is currently let to Boots, the lease of which ends this month.

BlackRock UK Property Fund sold the property to a joint venture between property companies ABIL Group and Clivedale in 2018 for more than £90m. The property was the first purchase in the UK for ABIL Group, which has developed a number of luxury hotels operating under Marriott brands in India including the St Regis Mumbai, W Goa, the Westin Pune and Le Meridien Nagpur. Architectural firm Squire & Partners, which worked on the Bulgari hotel in Knightsbridge, is overseeing the project.

Hyatt declined to comment on the development. The group's UK portfolio includes the Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill and the recently opened Great Scotland Yard hotel.

The project also joins the nearby redevelopment of the Admiralty Arch, which is due to open as a 96-bedroom hotel under Hilton's luxury Waldorf Astoria brand in 2022.
