Wagamama to shut down at-table ordering and payment app after users fall

Wagamama is to shut down its at-table ordering and payment app wagamamago 18 months after it was launched with the tagline ‘Uber for diners'.

The casual dining group, which was bought by The Restaurant Group at the end of 2018, had developed the app in partnership with Mastercard offering diners the option to settle their bill at the press of a button.

Available for free across iOS and Android devices it also had the capability to order items, split bills pre-order takeaways.

An email to users said it would close as the company had "seen usership of the app lessen" and found that customers "want something a little different than what wagamamago can offer".

When it was released in March 2018 Wagamama's chief information officer Richard Tallboy had said: "We wanted to make the dining experience easier and still retain the interaction of the waiter because we didn't want a restaurant full of people ordering food on their mobile devices and not enjoying the experience. Getting the bill is the last thing a customer experiences and it was important that this be quick and stress free for our customers."

It is understood that the casual dining brand will look to alternatives.
